Kuujjuaraapik Team Leaders and Umiujaq Team Leaders met for a preparation weekend from February 17th to February 19th to prepare the first annual expedition of NURRAIT on the coast of the Hudson Bay. Kuujjuaraapik Team will join Umiujaq Team from April 1st to April 7th for their annual expedition in Parc national Tursujuq which is “located near the shores of the Hudson Bay, near the Inuit community of Umiujaq”1.
On Friday, February 17th, Kuujjuaraapik Team Leaders, Maxime and Alexandre, flew to Umiujaq to meet up with Umiujaq Team Leaders, Olivier and Michel. In the afternoon, the Team Leaders had a meeting to plan their weekend itinerary and the required material for their snowmobile trip in the Parc national Tursujuq.
Saturday morning, the Team Leaders left on their snowmobiles accompanied by two local guides, Bobby, a guide for Nunavik Parks and Charlie, a local hunter. Charlie guided the small group all day through beautiful natural places. This day in the park allowed theTram Leaders to create an itinerary for the annual expedition and to take coordinates with a GPS. A plan B and campsites for the nights of the expedition were also determined.
After this long day in the national park, the two local guides traveled back to Umiujaq. As for the four Team Leaders, they stayed overnight at the refuge of Sukkuq River. The Team Leaders had a debriefing meeting in the evening to discuss the activities of the day and the logistics and the safety of the annual expedition. They all slept in an ocotogonal tent that belong to Nunavik Parks and that was very spacious and comfortable along Tasiujaq Lake.
Sunday morning, the Team Leaders travelled the 25 km left back to Umiujaq which will also be the last 25 km of the annual expedition itinerary. TheTeam Leaders met for one last time for a final debriefing before Kuujjuaraapik Team Leaders travel back to their village. At that point of the preparation weekend, the itinerary for the annual expedition was almost completed. There was only a small portion of the itinerary that the four Team Leaders could not complete in snowmobiles so Olivier and Michel would have to travel back to Parc national Tursujuq and complete the section on skis. This is what they did later in February.
This preparation weekend will have allowed our Kuujjuaraapik and Umiujaq teams to finalize an itinerary for NURRAIT first annual expedition on the coast of the Hudson Bay that will happen from April 1st to April 7th in Parc national Tursujuq. Only a few last-minute preparation tasks and our two teams will be ready to achieve this amazing challenge!
